After 11 Tools : Reflection

Reflection

1. What are your favorite tools you now have in your personal technology toolbox? Briefly describe a particular activity that you will plan for your students using at least one of these new tools.
One of my favorite tools was creating the Wiki. I am not really sure how I will use it in my class but it was fun!
I really enjoyed using Skype and creating Animotos. I have used both of these before so I think I might have liked them best just because I was more comfortable with them. Now that I have all this information I think the more I play around with each thing and get more comfortable I will use them more. I will be able to use Animoto with my classes when creating presentations or just sharing pictures from things like Track Meet and Rodeo Night. I would love to be able to use Skype with them to talk to high school or college track teams and coaches before our track meet.
I would also like to use some of the Apps on the i-touches when we do station activities. I think it will be a little tough at first because of the large groups that come into our classes but I am sure with a lot of practice it will all come together!!!

2. How have you transfomed your thinking about the learning that will take place in your classroom?
Now I think I will have a lot more opportunities to use technology in the gym. In the past we have been very limited (or at least I have!!) in what we could do but now I have lots more ideas. I hope at least some of the things I want to do will work out for us.
3. Were there any unexpected outcomes from this program that surprised you?
I really went into this with an open mind and not really sure what to expect. I think I learned more and tried more then I thought I would. I am glad that now at least I know a lot of things that are available and I know where to look if I need tutorials on how to do certain things.

Tool # 11

Digital Citizenship

There is so much in this component that I didn't even think about until I read a lot of this information. One thing I would want to make sure my students understand is about finding credible information on the internet and not just assuming that everything they read on the web is a fact. I would also make sure they were aware of the dangers of sharing personal information. Another thing I thought would be important to teach the students is about how to treat other people when responding to and posting on blogs. They need to make sure they practice etiquette while interacting with others on blogs.
I think when teaching these concepts it is important to go slowly, teach one topic at a time and give many examples. I think the more we do this and become comfortable with it the more we will be able to share with our students.

Tool #10

Exploring Mobile Technology and Apps

Two of the free Apps that I thought we might be able to use in Health Fitness were Action Bowling and Touch Hockey. We will probably only have about 4 i-touches so these will be good to use with students that might have to sit out for illness or injury. We try to keep our classes very active but this will be a good tool for the students that need to sit out for a class or two. (Hopefully they don't fake injuries just to play with the i-touches!!!)

I was able to play with an i-touch for a little while during a 3 hour workshop given by SBISD. It was a pretty basic workshop but it gave me some ideas of what we might be able to do. I think it was also a good starting point for me to be able to feel comfortable with the i-touch and explore on my own when we are given our classroom set.

It might be a little difficult to use the i-pads and i-touches in health fitness because we have so many students and so few devices. It will also be a little difficult because we try to keep the kids very active and this is pretty sedentary. I think the more we play around with them and learn from each other, we will be surprised with the many things we can do.

Tool # 9

Sharing Information Through Jing and Skype

A screencast would be very helpful in teaching students new skills. I think it might be useful in Health Fitness because we could make a screencast about various health topics and they could be shown in the gym or in the classrooms. Since we teach all the students in the school, this would be a good way to get information to all the students without having to repeat the same thing a million times. This would also be helpful to students that might have been absent. They could use a screencast that the teacher created to access any missed information.

There are so many different ways to use Skype in the classroom. Some ideas that really sounded good to me were: Students can work on a project with students in another city, your class can speak to an author or museum curator in another city or state instead of just reading about their information, students in a foreign language class can speak with native speakers of that language in another county and so much more!

I have used Skype to video conference with my family in New York and Michigan. It is such a great way to :be there: and experience what they are experiencing without actually being there. We got to be at my niece's 2nd birthday party even though they were in NY and we were in Houston!!!

Tool #8

Video Resources
I think using video resources is very helpful in the classroom. It is another tool that we can use to help our students understand many different concepts. It is also a great tool because it adds variety to our teaching.
I will be able to use some videos in health fitness when trying to teach the students various yoga, gymnastics or sports skills. This will be a good tool to use when we do stations and the students will be able to participate in fitness or yoga videos in small groups.
I chose a fitness video from Teacher Tube and a Yoga video from YouTube. I am having some problems adding these onto my blog but I will hopefully get it on there soon the right way!! I added a video bar and it contains the yoga video I wanted but it also included some others. Hmmmmmm, what to do now??? I will see a few other teachers tomorrow so hopefully they can give me some helpful hints.

Tool #7

Digital Storytelling

I am having some trouble attaching my video story to this blog. Stay tuned...................
